Synopsis
A series of forums on cinema-related issues, aiming to stimulate critical analysis about film and modern culture and how they affect each other. Each programme examines a different screen issue with a panel of film critics and includes compilations of clips and comment. The critics analyse, dissect, compare and theorise.
1: Is ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ exploitation or honourable marketing? Is ‘Pretty Woman’ moral or amoral? Is ‘Gallipoli mythologised or romanticised? Critics are Peter Castaldi, Mary Colbert, Matthew Leonard, Kevin Sadlier.
2: Why are women so absent in terms of story, character, and integrity (age and experience) in mainstream cinema? Critics are Deborah Jones, Shelley Kay, Paul le Petit, Andrew Urban.
3: What makes Australian films distinctive - the landscape, the mannerisms or the myths? Is low-budget the way for the future? Critics are Sandra Hall, Adrienne McKibbins, Thomas Schick, David Stratton.
4: Why are cinema and television so Anglo-Celtic and aimed at middle America and subruban Australia? How did black actors break out of servant roles or the musical stereotype? Critics are Russell Edwards, Anna Maria Dell’oso, Don Perlgut, Annabelle Sheehan.
5: Who has the power to decide what gets made or seen? What influence do critics really have? How does the exhibitor or distributor influence the success of a film? Can the agents or the stars get projects made? Can you protect an industry? Critics are Graham Barry, Peter Crayford, Blake Murdoch, Katherine Tulich.
