Recording Rowntree

Synopsis
Interviews the painter Kenneth Rowntree in his studio near Corbridge, Northumberland, accompanied by examples of his work and archive stills. Provides a record of the working life of a significant painter and illumines an important period in the development of English painting. Rowntree talks about his Quaker upbringing, the Royal College of Art and the Slade schools of the 1930s, the war years spent as a conscientious objector working for Kenneth Clark’s ‘Recording Britain’ scheme, post-war trips to America and Europe, and a series of watercolours commissioned for the book ‘A Prospect of Wales’. In regard to his painting he talks extensively about his work and its development, the nature of ‘recording’, his use of lettering and typography, the move from figurative to abstract treatment that came about during his time as Professor of Fine Art at Newcastle University, and the historical context of what he is trying to achieve.
