Battle of Algiers, The

Alternative title
Battaglia di Algeri, La
Synopsis
A realistic reconstruction of the fight for liberation in Algiers between 1954 and 1957, resulting in 1962 in a free Algerian state. The film was banned in France for fear of inciting civil unrest, but it served as the prototype for the mainstream political cinema of the next two decades.

The DVD version issued in 2003 is digitally remastered from a new print (restoring the film’s newsreel look), and incorporates previously unseen footage (featuring the recitation of an Islamic prayer). This version was assembled with the participation of FilmFour and represents the most complete version of the film available.
Special features include a new interview with director Gillo Pontecorvo; extensive production stills gallery; original French and Arabic version with optional English subtitles; widescreen presentation.
