Reclaiming the City

Synopsis
Birmingham has become a concrete city designed to cope with the motor car but ignoring its human components, resulting in a dangerous and unattractive environment. Planners and architects are concerned with satisfying the demands of commerce and industry as well as residents and users, by creating a visually attractive environment that encourages people to use it rather than be intimidated by it. Asks whether the redevelopment of Birmingham’s Gas Street canal basin to build a new convention centre will be an unappealing testament to short-term economics.
