Synopsis

Looks at the north of England, once described as Britain’s ‘anvil’ and ‘workshop’ in heavy industries such as coalmining, shipbuilding, textiles and steel. Now these great creators of wealth have declined and unemployment is high. This programme looks at three areas - the Dearne Valley, the town of Consett, and the Dean Clough Industrial Park in Halifax - and shows how they have been rejuvenated through the involvement of new businesses including a land restoration project, a snack food manufacturer and a carpet mill conversion.
