Ray of Hope
- Synopsis
- Looks at the users of lasers in telecommunications and medicine and their possible use in America’s ‘Star Wars’ programme. In medicine lasers are used in delicate eye operations and in general surgery as high-precision bloodlesss scalpels. They can remove tattoos and port wine stains, and have great potential for unblocking the clogged coronary arteries which can cause heart attacks. Laser light carried by optical fibre is replacing copper wire in the telephone system. Videodiscs and compact discs are read by a laser beam and lasers are used to make holograms - 3D images on a glass plate.
