Raphael (2 Parts)

Alternative title
Rafaello
Synopsis
A two-part profile of the Italian painter Raphael (1483-1520).
Part 1: Examines Raphael’s life and career up to the age of 25, looking in particular at the ways in which he synthesised the lessons learned from such artists as Leonardo da Vinci and Michaelangelo Buonarroti and how this knowledge manifested itself in his ‘Madonna and Child’ paintings. Filmed in and around Perugia, Urbino and Florence.
Part 2: Discusses Raphael’s work for the Vatican in Rome, his designs for the Sistine Chapel and his appointment as architect of St Peter’s. Questions whether modern viewers can still respond to great art based on the Christian story, classical humanism, and the love of the Greek ideal. Explores the influence of contemporary artists and thinkers, including Michelangelo, and the Classical art of ancient Rome. Examines the evolution of some of Raphael’s best-known images. Filmed in Rome.
