Rachel Whiteread: ‘House’
- Synopsis
- Rachel Whiteread’s ‘House’, a house cast in concrete from a terraced house in Grove Road in London’s East End, rapidly became a cause célèbre, generating impassioned debate and winning Whiteread the Turner Prize. The video charts the transformation of ‘House’ from an ordinary home to an extraordinary monumental sculpture and its eventual demolition. The video is interspersed with occasional observations from Whiteread’s own video diaries. ‘House’ was commissioned by Artangel and Beck’s, completed in 1993 and demolished in January 1994.
