Question of Balance?, A4: Learning at Work
- Synopsis
- Examines the question of learning at work. The context is that of the manufacturing industry where there are many different approaches to training. Looks at training at Vosper Thornycroft, Southampton, with a long naval tradition behind its boatbuilding and the emphasis very much on the provision of engineering training and on the acquisition of NVQs. Siemens, which imports kitchen equipment from Germany, provides ‘hands-on’ training for sales staff. Training at Sheerness Steel is examined both in terms of presentation and philosophy; the company has a scheme which endeavours to support all employees in on-going learning, and not necessarily in job-specific areas. At a steel company in Germany, a country which has long been regarded as a benchmark example of good training practice, the training organiser explains the nature, philosophy, structure and funding of training provision in Germany.

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
