Quality Assistant, The

Synopsis: Looks at an example of an expert system in use at the Pirelli tyre factory in Turin. The expert system takes the data from the factory management computer and examines the manufacturing trail of any tyres which have been produced with defects; it then advises on the most appropriate maintenance plan for the factory machinery. Since the ‘rules’ are uncertain, for instance, a defective vulcaniser is likely to produce a certain type of defect, rather than certain, and in any case the same defect could be produced by several causes - an expert system is more appropriate than a traditional algorithmic program.
