Synopsis
First programme in the series BRITAIN’S HOME FRONT, covering the period 1940-42. Eyewitness accounts by ordinary British citizens tell how they coped with everyday life against a backdrop of air raid shelters, evacuation, gas masks, the Home Guard and even getting married wearing decontamination suits during the ‘Phoney War’, Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. The stories are illustrated by Movietone public information films and cinema newsreel accounts of events including the Blitz on London and Coventry and the King and Queen touring the East End of London.
