Public Faces

Synopsis
Describes ways in which the techniques of the television interview have changed over the past 40 years. Uses examples from the BBC archives to show how increasingly sophisticated techniques have been matched by greater frankness in the conduct of interviews with political and cultural leader. Also describes the role of the interviewer in trying to get behind the interviewee’s public face to learn the truth about formal claims or public facade. Examples are Lord Reith interviewed by Malcolm Muggeridge; Anthony Eden interviewed by Leslie Mitchell; Margaret Thatcher interviewed by Russell Harty and David Dimbleby; Neil and Glenys Kinnock interviewed by Terry Wogan; and Nelson Mandela interviewed by Joan Bakewell.
