Psychological Defence Mechanisms

Synopsis
Beginning with denial, the first example shows a normal reaction to loss - a wife cannot believe her husband is dead. The second example shows a smoker in a hospital bed. He has gangrene of his right foot, and it is clear to the visiting doctor that it’s going the same way as the left, and that needed amputation below the knee. He denies this and tries to convince us that he is getting better - yet amputation tomorrow will be the evitable outcome. The third and final example shows a very thin, anorexic patient who tells us that she needs to be six or seven pounds lighter.

Projection, regression and repression, are presented in a similar manner - progressing from the normal use as a coping mechanism to the more pathological defence mechanism. Of course, when this happens is a matter of debate and no doubt you will have your own views. The programme concludes by recapping and summarising the most important points. The programme uses vignettes to illustrate normal and abnormal use of mental mechanisms such as denial, projection, regression and repression.

Bonus material includes and interview with a psychotherapist and consultant psychiatrist discussing defence mechanisms in clinical practice.

The original 22-minute programme was produced in 1984 and 20 minutes of additional material were added in 2004.
