Principles of Tibetan Medicine, The

Synopsis
In Rikon, Switzerland, Dr Tenzin Choedak, personal physician to the Dalai Lama gives a series of three talks covering the underlying causes of illness, diagnosis and treatment in traditional Buddhist medicine. Although based on the Indian Ayurvedic system, Tibetan medicine includes treatments such as acupuncture and moxabustion which originated in China and elsewhere in Asia. These are distinguised from their original forms when used in Tibetan medicine by being inextricable aligned with Buddhist teaching and practice. Dr Choedak explains how illness results from an imbalance in the interplay of the entire physical, emotional and astrological state of the individual; consequently the Tibetan physician treats the cause rather than the symptoms of an illness.
