Prevention of Corrosion in Chemical Process Plant

Synopsis
Stainless steels for chemical plant contain Cr, Ni, Mo, Zr, Ta, Nb or Ti which form thin passive corrosion-resistant oxide films, the choice depending on chemical, physical and economic factors without imparing safety. Fabrication, welding, stressing, oxygen-starvation, crevice shielding, e.g. by sludge or scale, may destroy the film or prevent regeneration by oxygen. Emphasises continuous monitoring for corrosion and cracking and the need to select construction, repair and maintenance methods and materials to minimise attack.*CHEMSOC
