Predatory Behaviour of the Asp-Viper ('Vipera Aspis’)
- Synopsis
- A series of experiments, shown in logical sequence, to illustrate the way in which the different senses of the asp-viper come into play in predation. The general behaviour pattern falls into four parts: 1) bite - shows initial releaser is visual perception of movement and ground vibrations; 2) a latent period; 3) searching - depends on chemical stimulus from bitten prey, Jacobson’s organs and tongue tip used for searching; 4) ingestion - prey ingested head first, chemical stimuli from skin important in finding head of prey rather than vision or touch, also important in overall predatory behaviour.*
