Precise Measurement in Engineering

Synopsis
Shows how components manufactured to high specification need accurate, well-maintained machine tools, set within specific tolerance limits. Explains how go/no-go gauges, micrometers and dial gagues may be used to check measurements in factories. The processes of traceability are described from these shop floor gauges, through the factory gauge room to the UK standard of length maintained at the National Physical Laboratory. The 1983 definitition of a metre is explained, showing how this is measured using pulses of light generated by lasers. Shows interferometers being used by NPL to check measurements in more than one dimension. Also covers computer-aided design, tolerences and micrometers, go and no-go gauges.
