Practical Phonetics (3 Parts)
- Synopsis
- A 15-unit video course on three tapes providing self-study material for use by students acquiring practical phonetic skills of consonant and vowel identification and discrimination. The course covers most of the consonants listed in the International Phonetic Alphabet and primary and secondary cardinal vowels. Each group of sounds is present as follows: 1) the sounds are described and demonstrated by the presenter; 2) students are presented with exercises that test their ability to identify the sounds in question and to discriminate between phonetically similar sounds. Close-ups of the speaker allow students to make use of visual as well as auditory cues. The final two units consist entirely of ear-training exercises.
