Poster ‘Art’ Of the 1920s and 1930s
- Synopsis
- A study of posters produced between the wars for the LMS and LNER railway companies, the Empire Marketing Board, Austin Reed and Shell-Mex. A variety of artists and styles is apparent in this collection, but the designs all indicate one aspect of the commercial art of the period: the promotion of a company’s public image through its association with ‘art’ and its implied aim of discernment and good taste. An analysis of styles, typography and composition provides the basis for a discussion of the relationship between art and advertising.
