Synopsis
Traces the life and work of Ingres, well-known for his allegorical, historical and religious compositions, his female nudes and his portraits. Follows his moves from his native Montauban in the south of France to Paris and the studio of Jacque-Louis David, and on to Rome and Florence. Describes his trimumphant return to Paris in 1824, where he enjoyed a decade of success before he fell from favour and retreated to Rome once more. Recounts his final successes as a painter, draughtsman and teacher of art in Rome before moving back to the Paris of the Second Empire. At the time of his death, Ingres was perhaps the most famous artist in the world.
