Synopsis
Introduces the World Conservation Strategy - a strategy designed as a ‘global remedy for keeping the earth alive’. Its main aims are to maintain essential ecological processes and life support systems, to preserve genetic diversity and to ensure sustainable use of species and ecosystems. Argues that ‘effective conservation is not merely desirable but essential if long-term economic growth is to be achieved - conservation and development need each other’.
