- There are currently nine known planets in the solar system. Mathematics of planetary motion predicts a tenth, outer planet and observations of the orbits of Neptune support this theory. Looks at the discovery of Uranus, the prediction then discovery of the existence of Neptune and later Pluto. Concludes with the search, using modern infra-red and other techniques, for the unknown planet.
