The 166th series of Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, delivered by earth scientist Dr James Jackson. The lectures relate phenomena on the surface of the earth to their causes deep within.
1: Explorers, meteorites, volcanoes and earthquakes all provide clues to the physical makeup of the earth.
2: The key to understanding the changing pattern of oceans and continents lies within the oceans explained by the theory of plate tectonics.
3: Investigates how solid rock is turned to molten lava and how volcanoes are a planet’s way of keeping cool.
4: Evidence from sunken cities and sea shells found his in ountain ranges is used to explain what happens when continents stretch and collide, something not explained by plate tectonics.
5: How water has affected the history of the planet. Looks at the moon, Venus and Mars to imagine what life would be like without it.
