Pirandello in Performance

Synopsis
Pirandello’s prolific dramatic output in the twenties and thirties was to exercise a profound influence in the subsequent development of European drama. He succeeded in demonstrating in theatrical terms the psychological and emotional implications of modernist doubt and fragmentation. His plays offer an ambiguity which renders them open to multiple interpretations.
The history of Pirandello productions span a period of over 70 years. While a few of the examples in this selection have been chosen for their sheer inventiveness, most have been picked in order to illustrate some aspect of the way in which theatrical interpretation of the plays has developed over the years.
