Pioneers, The (6 Parts)

Synopsis
Series looking at ground-breaking medical research and treatment during the 50 years of the National Health Service.
1 (producer Fiona Holmes): Sir John Crofton describes how, as a junior doctor, was involved in the first drug trials of streptomycin in the 1940s and recalls the breakthroughs that led to the effective eradication of tuberculosis.
2: Looks at improvements in the treatment of mentally ill patients from the late 1940s, particularly at the work of Dr David Clark at the Fulbourn Mental Hospital in Cambridge, where in 1948 he set up therapeutic communities, introducing tranquillisers and establishing a more humane regime.
3 (producer Julie Clayton): Profiles the work of Dr Beryl Corner, who set up Bristol’s first premature baby ;unit at Southmead Hospital in Bristol. She began her medical career in 1934, and age at 85 recalls her struggle to work as a paediatrician at a time when women were barred from many jobs in medicine.
4 (producer Sally Doganis): Looks at the pioneering cardiac surgery undertaken by Donald Ross, who began his career in the 1940s when heart patients were packed in ice to slow their heartbeats to allow eight-minute operations; today many heart defects that would have been once fatal are routinely corrected.
5 (producer Robin Brightwell): Examines the work of Dr Barbara Ansell, who with her team at Taplow Hospital in Berkshire in 1946 pioneered techniques including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and surgery, for treating childhood arthritis.
6 (producer Deborah Perkin): Describes how GP Julian Tudor Hart over a 30-year career has transformed health care in a Welsh mining village, using preventive medicine to help his patients to live longer, healthier lives. He took blood-pressure screening and treatment into the surgery and investigated links between bowel cancer and gut bacteria.
