Pictures in a Patient

Synopsis
In the 1950s mobile x-ray units were to be found in many cities in Britain and for the first time x-rays were freely available. Since then there have been significant developments in the technology. Ultrasonic scanning of pregnant women is routine; nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), a non-invasive method of obtaining pictures, is being used extensively not only to treat the seriously ill but as an early diagnostic tool. Safe methods of using radioactive isotopes are being developed.
