Phrynelox Scaber ('Antennariidae’): Feeding by Angling

Synopsis
'Phrynelox scaber’ belongs to the angler fish family. The first dorsal fin spine, the illicium, serves this fish as ‘tackle’ for the catching of prey. It is situated right at the front of the head (almost on the upper lip), sits on a socket joint and is thus very mobile. At the tip of this spine is a skin appendage, the esca, which is variously formed according to species, and which acts as bait. Prey which attempts to nibble at this bait is swallowed. The angler suddenly opens its mouth and sucks in prey and surrounding water. The film shows an approx. 15cm large ‘Phynelox scaber’ which entices prey with its worm-shaped esca and then swallows them in a flash. Made from material shot in 1965. An Encyclopaedia Cinematographica film.*
