Pharmacology of the Autonomic Nervous System, The

Synopsis
The autonomic nervous system is considered mainly in relation to the control of blood pressure, and an anaesthetised cat is used to show the effect of chemical transmitter substances on blood pressure and heart rate. The release of substances from nerve endings and the way in which the release of substances is modified by various drugs. Alpha and beta actions of adrenaline and the muscarinic actions of acetylcholine. The mode of action of ganglion blocking drugs, parasympathetic blockers, and sympathetic blockers is described.
