Person-Centred Approach to Counselling, A (3 Parts)
- Synopsis
- Part 1 features the client, Michael, in his first interview. In this interview Brian Thorne demonstrates the core conditions of person-centred therapy. These are embodied in his acceptance of Michael (warmth), his deep understanding of Michael’s predicament (empathy) and his refusal to be anything other than himself (genuineness).
Part 2 (OUT OF DISTRIBUTION): Louise has been counselled by Brian for 24 sessions. She was initially referred by her GP because of severe cyclical depression. Despite the long-term counselling relationship there are still difficulties to be faced, in terms of communication between Louise and Brian. In the past two or three weeks Louise’s incapacitating anxieties have returned. Shows counsellor and client at a critical point in their relationship. Note: To the producer’s knowledge it is the first time that a British training tape has attempted to record material well into the counselling process.
Part 3 (OUT OF DISTRIBUTION): Brian and his client Louise explore the effects of their counselling work together some months after it has finished. - Language
