Perception and Communication. Part 6: The Hixon Level Crossing Disaster of January 1968
- Synopsis
- Uses a railway accident at a level crossing as a history to provide actual examples of the factors affecting perception and communication, factors often similar to those that were demonstrated more generally in the first five programmes. The programme is based on the Report of the Official Inquiry. The first part is a re-creation of the events of the accident, when an express train ran into a huge road transporter on an unmanned level crossing, killing 12 people and injuring 44 others. Secondly, Dr Abercrombie looks at the reasons, as far as they could be established, for the occurrence of the accident. It was found by the Inquiry that many failures in communication had occurred between institutions and individuals concerned on several crucial occasions.
