Perception and Communication. Part 1: Seeing’s Believing

Synopsis
Emphasises that our previous learning about things relevant to anything that we observe affects the way we observe it. Much of our learning is not done consciously; we are mostly unaware of the assumptions or expectations that we are continually using to interpret the environment to which our senses are exposed. The Ames rotating trapezoid and distorted room help one to realise how much the rectangularity which dominates our built environment affects our perception. People whose non-conscious learning of this kind has been based on quite different experiences will bring different expectations to the interpretation of the same information. This can lead to special difficulties in communication between people of different cultures.
