Balinese Ritual Theatre

Synopsis
The origins and practice of Balinese ritual theatre are examined. Its function in Balinese consciousness and culture as a channel through which the gods and ancestal spirits manifest themselves has ensured its continuing creative development. For, although Balinese arts require disciplined learning and, as ritual, exact repetition, they only achieve communication with the other world in so far as they are performed with ‘Taksu’, a high form of artistic inspiration inducing the necessary state of receptivity.
