Patients in Control: Patient Controlled Analgesia

Synopsis
Patient-controlled analgesia is not new - home medication is an example of a patient’s ability to control pain. However, machines that deliver analgesics post-operatively are becoming an important tool in pain management. Understanding their use enables nurses to be an informed part of the care team. This video looks at the patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) machine, how it works and how to involve patients and their carers. The nurse has an important role to play in pre-operative counselling, patient education and the monitoring of the patient’s pain.
