Synopsis
The INSIDE BRITISH POLITICS series of seven programmes was compiled from an archive of material recorded by Granada Television since 1971. The presenter, the late John Mackintosh, was Professor of Politics at the University of Edinburgh and MP for Berwick and East Lothian.
This programme shows what actually happens when a party takes office and tries to turn its policies into action. Ministers and civil servants describe the detailed policy-making in govenment. In 1964 Sir Harold Wilson fought his first election as leader of the Labour Party on a pledge to end land speculation and bring down the price of land. The manifesto promised ‘to set up a land commission to buy for the community land on which building or re-building is to take place’ Fred Willey (Minister of Land 1964-67) and Sir Frederick Bishop (Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housiong 1955-66) discuss these issues with John Mackintosh.
