Partnering Patients to Manage Pain After Surgery

Synopsis
Despite recent advances in acute pain management and increased scientific interest, some patients continue to experience unrelieved pain after surgery. This video uses the patient’s experience of surgery to consider how care on the ward can actively contribute to reducing pain and suffering. Pre-operative considerations include pain as a multi-dimensional concept, and patients’ fears and expectations. Post-operative issues include assessment of pain, transition from parental opioids, and utilising non-pharmacological interventions. There is also consideration of patient, professional and organisational barriers to effective pain management.
