Pantomime Dame, The

Synopsis
The pantomime has been a uniquely British tradition for over 200 years, but the pantomime dame belongs to an older tradition having evolved from Grimaldi’s clown of the early 1800s through the burlesque tradition of female impersonation embodied by Dan Leno in the 1900s. Examines the reasons for the Dame’s enduring hold on the audience’s imagination and investigates the changes in her portrayal corresponding to changing attitudes to women and sexuality.
