Orphan Generation, The

Synopsis

Looks at community-based care and support for children orphaned by AIDS, most of whom are in sub-Saharan Africa. Begins with THESE ARE OUR CHILDREN (10 min), an appeal to political leaders, planners and aid donors to support local communities in meeting the basic needs of AIDS orphans. The remainder focuses on the struggles of one Ugandan village to cope with the deepening orphan crisis. Local development personnel and social workers explain how the needs of these children can be met, and their rights protected, by support for community-based organisations rather than institutional care.
