Origins of Oil

Synopsis
An account of the formation of a hydrocarbon reservoir. Describes ways in which water erodes rock for sedimentary basins. Shows partially decayed material (plankton, bacteria, dead animals) from hydrocarbon sources. Illustrates sedimentary layering and outcrop examples of faulting, tilting, bending and overburden fracturing to form traps. Describes how temperature effects due to burial causes kerogen breakdown to hydrocarbon. Shows migration of oil by gravity via rock ‘pathways’ with escape to surface or trapped to form reservoirs.
