Organometallic Chemistry: The Handling of Air- And Moisture-Sensitive Substances (5 Parts)
- Subtitle
- Handling of air- and moisture-sensitive substances, The
- Synopsis
- 1: Introduction - principal techniques employed in the air-and moisture-free handling of chemicals. Describes the choice and economic use of the various types of grease for taps and joints. Shows the distillation of THF over freshly-pressed sodium as an example of the preparation of a pure dry solvent.
2: A preparation in which oxygen from the air must be excluded demonstrates filtration under nitrogen atmosphere and safe handling of carbon monoxide.
3: Demonstrates the preparation under nitrogen atmosphere, the use of a glove box and vacuum sublimation.
4: Identification of product from reaction of mesityl oxide with platinum-2 compound. The component parts of a basic vacuum line are shown, with particular reference to the safe handling of liquid nitrogen traps.
5: Isolation of diphenylmethylphosphine. The experiment demonstrates the safe handling of a toxic and nauseous compound in the fume cupboard during a vacuum distillation. - Language
