Oral Composition (3 Parts)
- Synopsis
- Part 1: A very low-ability class of girls of 13+ doing elementary question and answer work in French with emphasis on adjectives and prepositions. Motivation and willingness are outstanding. The lesson excerpt is based on the exploitation of one large simple visual aid. The validity of this sort of descriptive work in the foreign language can be questioned.
Part 2: Three months later the same pupils have made some progress linguistically but their learning problems are marked. The teacher first revises vocabulary by means of flash cards and realia, then introduces a simple picture for oral composition and ends with the exploitation of a larger and more complex picture containing all the earlier elements.
Part 3: The author teaches a class of mixed-ability girls from St Mary’s High School, Hull. During the lesson she uses visual aids and props to stimulate French dialogue with the children. Part of the lesson is also taken up by a role play situation of shopkeeper and shopper stimulating dialogue with the words ‘Vous Desirez?' - Language
