Optimisation of a Species Selective Beam Trawl
- Synopsis
- Looks at an EU-supported beam trawl research project set up as a co-operative venture between institutes in Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK which ran for three years from October 1993. The most promising alternatives from a previous study were developed further and tested at sea after model studies in the flume tank at the Sea Fish Industyr Authority in Hull. The performance of each type of experimental gear was compared with conventional gear fished simultaneously on the other side of the boat. The new designs were aimed at creating escape openings for roundfish in the top panel of the net without affecting the catch of flatfish. The overall aim was to reduce rounding by-catches.
