- A CAL module in five units on optical mineralogy: Introduction; Basic concepts (the nature of light, the petrological microscope); Optical studies under plane-polarised light (shape, cleavage, refractive index, relief, colour, absorption scheme); Cross-polarised light studies (interference of light, extinction, twinning, birefrigence, optical indicatrix, interference figures); Mineral identification. Approximately 4 hours of teaching material, intended as a complement to lectures and practicals.
