Onnagata and the Fan
- Synopsis
- Videotaped source material for research purposes: here Gojo Masanosuke, one of Japan’s most celebrated ‘Onnagata’, is seen teaching a group of performers some of the basic body, hand and face movements associated with ‘Onnagata’, the female role, one of the great achievements of Japanese Kabuki theatre, demanding subtlety of gesture, expression and rhythm. Masanosuke’s commentary and instructions are recorded through an interpreter. The final part focuses on Masanosuke’s instruction on the use of the fan - an indispensable part of both Kabuki and the Noh.
