Online Storage and Retrieval

Synopsis
An interactive videodisc describing the storage and retrieval of bibliographic information. It is based on a conventional training course for online searches. A ‘to camera’ presentation, set in a library, information scientist’s office and a computer centre, explaining the need for, and processes involved in, the abstracting, indexing and computer storage of scientific and other literature. Describes the organisation of an online system and introduces the principles involved in organising a database such as the Institution of Electrical Engineers’ INSPEC database. The concept of a search strategy is introduced and Venn diagrams explain how Boolean operators are used to broaden or narrow a search. Concludes with an extremely simplified simulation of an online retrieval system. Throughout the programme computer-generated exercises are run to test understanding and allow the learner to recap if necessary.
