Old School Ties 4 Parts)

Synopsis
A series examining the lack of educational choices for disabled children. Asks if they would be better served in mainstream schools.
1: Disabled adults recount their experiences inside the strict regimes of ‘special’ schools where bullying, public humiliation, isolation and corporal punishment were commonplace, and often accompanied by poor educational standards and low expectations.
2: How parents have to fight to get their children into mainstream education. Shows two children who are kept at home because their parents are dissatisfied with special schools, and the parents of another child who are battling their local education authority to get ther daughter from an institution to the local school.
3: Looks at inclusive education, being practiced in Newham, London, and in a few individual schools.
4: Follows two families as they appeal to the new Special Educational Needs Tribunals in their attempts to get their children into local schools.
