Synopsis
Part 1: Types of energy output, fireball, heat, blast, immediate radiation. Medical effects of flash, heat, treatment of burns, blast. Fall-out pattern, decay of radiation, effect of distance, time and shedding from radiation, protection factors. Sealing laws for the effects from weapons of ranging power.
Part 2: Detection and measurement of radiation. Effects of radiation on the cell; late effects of radiation; carcinogenesis and mutations. Local damage by ? and ? particles. Inhalation and ingestion of fallout. Gamma radiation-dose, dose rate and effects of whole body. Types of radiation sickness; early responses, latent period, haematopoietic gastro-intestinal and neurological response. Treatment, modifying factors, tolerance to radiation. Effect of shielding etc. and tolerance to dose rate in modifying response; rules of thumb for estimation of dosage; psychological aspects.
Part 3: Dissemination of organisms. Types of organism and disease. Defence measures. Aerosol attack - meteorological effects. Detection and identification; factors affecting target population. Protection, proplylaxis, diagnosis. Disinfection, treatment and control of the epidemic.
Part 4: Classification of chemical agents. Meteorological effects. Types of agent and effects. Incapacitants, choking agents, psychomimetics, blister agents, nerve agents; effects and treatment. Detection, protection and proplylaxis, decontamination. Brief mention is made of effects on foodstuffs.
