North Sea 1: The Tectonic Framework

Synopsis
Presents two models of basin formation and development and shows how the case for each has been argued. Considers the nature of the North Sea sedimentary basin, with maps and cross-sections showing the total thickness of post-Zechstein, rift and sag-phase, thickness geometry and refraction evidence for crustal thinning. Discusses the McKenzie model (pure shear model) of crustal extension as applied to subsidence across the central graben of the North Sea. Describes the Wernicke model for crustal extension and its application to the North Sea Viking graben. Interprets the deep seismic line NSDP’84 and tests this with computer-simulated section balancing. Applies the Wernicke ideas to the Solway basin and speculates that the northern North Sea is an asymmetrical extensional basin formed between two huge strike-slip faults.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
