Synopsis
1: Dr Dudley Hershback, a 1986 Nobel Laureate for chemistry, examines the concept of chemical synthesis and explains its applications to everyday life. Features the stories of Alfred Nobel an of Robert Burns Woodward, the ‘Einstein’ of synthetic chemistry. Poet Anne Carson discusses 18th-century French chemist Antoine Lavoisier. Filmed on location in Paris, Sweden, New Mexico and Harvard University.
2: Dr J Michael Bishop, a 1989 Nobel Laureate for medicine, looks at advances in medical technology and their impact on society. Discusses the work of Versalius and of Watson and Crick, and looks genetic engineering. Asks why medicine concentrates on the body at the expense of the person, questions the value of extraordinary treatments, and reflects on the chilling ‘man as god’ message in Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’. Filmed on location in Venice, Florence and Cambridge.
3: Dr Leon Lederman, 1988 Nobel Laureate for physics, contemplates the universe and discusses the relevance of physics to daily life. Covers particle physics, Heisenberg’s Principle of Uncertainy and high-tech electronics illustrated using animations, Hawaiian scenery and a performance of ‘Hamlet’.
