Synopsis
Shows an inorganic chemical research laboratory at the University of Edinburgh and the applications laboratory of an NMR instrument maker, Bruker Spectrospin, in West Germany. In Edinburgh Professor E A V Ebsworth describes one of the studies his research group has carried out using phosphorus-31 NMR spectroscopy. Shows the preparation of the NMR sample, which involves the handling of volatile chemicals, the running of the NMR spectrum, and obtaining structural information. Modern nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has many applications. Large superconducting magnets and powerful computers are combined in instruments which provide a valuable tool for the research chemist studying structural problems in either the liquid or solid state. Clinical applications of whole-body imaging are constantly being updated, and NMR microscopy is no longer confined to the theoretical drawing board.
Some examples from the West German applications laboratory show the problems and successes of metal nucleus NMR, the potential of modern two-dimensional techniques and why solid samples are spun rapidly at a magic angle. To demonstrate the principles of magnetic resonance imaging a closer look is taken at the phantom sample used to set up an imaging spectrometer. Uses as examples cross-sectional images of a human brain and, on a microscopic scale, a plant leaf. The programme ends with a moving 3-D image.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
