Nitrogen Fixation in Lucerne
- Synopsis
- Describes an experiment in the International Biological Programme to estimate the amount of atmospheric nitrogen fixed by lucerne (alfalfa). Infection of root hairs by nodule bacteria and the development of root nodules is shown by time-lapse cinemicrography, then the design, execution (seed inoculation, field work, sampling and nitrogen determination) and results of a field experiment are shown. The experiment showed that more atmospheric nitrogen could be fixed by the bacteria than is normally applied in the form of nitrogenous fertilisers in intensive agriculture.
